London Car Rental FAQs

Here's the answers to some of the most asked questions about car hire in London.

What will be included with my car rental in London?
The prices that you see on RentalCarLondon.co.uk will, in most cases, include insurance cover that will help to protect you should you have an accident, should the car be stolen and from personal liability. The car hire suppliers will usually include any fees for premium collection locations, such as one of the London Airports, and any VAT or other taxes. An unlimited mileage allowance is normally included and, unless otherwise specified, you will benefit from a breakdown recovery service in the event of a problem with the vehicle. However, it is important that you check exactly what is included with the vehicle before making a reservation as what's included can vary depending upon the type of car, the supplier and your chosen car hire location. Note that insurance excesses will apply just like any other insurance policy although waivers are usually available if you want them. You will be able to see what is included with your chosen vehicle when you get to the reservation stage.

What kinds of vehicle can you provide?
We can source a wide selection of cars with something available to suit everybody. Check out our car hire categories page to see more information about the vehicles that are available in London.

How old do I need to be to hire a car in London?
You need to be at least 21 years old to rent a car in London. However, most of the car categories featured on our website can only be rented by those aged over 25. At certain rental locations, a young driver fee may be charged to drivers who are aged between 21 and 24 years old (this will normally be about £10 per day), you will be notified of this during the reservation process and is usually payable when you pick up the vehicle. We take every care to show appropriate vehicles during our search process, even including an age verification, but it is very important that you double check the details with your chosen rental supplier if you are less than 25 years old.

Where can I collect and drop off my rental car?
We can provide car rental at a huge range of locations around London and throughout the boroughs. Popular places to collect your car include one of the major London airports (Heathrow, Gatwick, City and Luton Airports), Kings Cross railway station and central London locations. When you start your car rental search you'll see a list of pick up and drop off locations which are available in London.

Who provides your vehicles?
We have partnerships with local companies, internet brokers and also the global car rental brands with locations in London which includes Alamo, Avis, Enterprise, Europcar, Hertz, Thrifty and others to offer the best possible availability and the widest range of car sizes and specifications. Vehicles available include Audis, BMWs, Chevrolets, Fords, Hondas, Kias, Seats and Volkswagens amongst others.

Where can I find the opening hours of the location?
Because there are so many locations in London opening hours will obviously vary. When you use our car hire search you will be able to enter your preferred times for collection and drop off of the car and only locations that are open at those times will be available. You can also find the opening hours of a specific location during the reservation process. In most cases locations which are sited at or close to an airport are open for the largest amount of time, usually 24 hours a day.

How do I pay for my car rental?
Normally your chosen car rental company will take a deposit via credit or debit card at the time of reservation, the balance will then be payable on collection of the car. Discounts are sometimes available on advance bookings by paying the full amount up front. All of the suppliers listed on our website use secure methods when processing your payment.

What should I bring with me when I collect my vehicle?
Most of the car hire companies in London will ask you to bring your full driving licence (both the card and paper section if you have one of the new style licences) as well as a minimum of two types of identification which has to show your current address and another form of photographic identification (example - an electricity bill, a council tax bill and your passport). You should also be able to produce a valid credit or debit card which will be used to pay for the booking and take a security deposit for the vehicle on collection. It is important to check with your chosen car rental company though as policies will differ between suppliers.

Is it possible to add an additional driver?
Yes, all of the London car rental suppliers listed on our website will let you have an additional driver listed on the car. In the majority of cases you will be able to do this when you make a reservation on their website. If you forget to do this at the time of booking you can also add extra drivers at the rental desk when you go to collect your car.

Can I hire a satellite navigation system with my car?
Yes you can. Most of the car hire companies in London will be able to supply you with a sat nav. The majority of suppliers listed on our website will offer this as an option at the time of reservation but you should also be able to add a satellite navigation system at the rental desk when you collect your vehicle.

I need to hire a car for business, can you provide me a VAT receipt?
A VAT receipt is normally provided by the car rental company when you go to pick up your vehicle. If not, just ask and they will give you the paperwork that you need.
